Grace was born in Canton, China; their families, including George's father, the patriarch Sai Yuck Seu, arranged their marriage. George, owner of a grocery store in Greenville, Mississippi, went to China for the wedding. They returned to the United States just before the Japanese invasion in 1941 cut off all possibility of leaving.
