Rosa Bastianelli taught at the Catholic school at Sunnyside Plantation, near Lake Village, Arkansas. Sunnyside had been investigated by the Federal Government for peonage. Out of the report to the Federal authorities it was determined that the children of the sharecroppers were not being schooled. After complaints by the Italian Consulate in New Orleans, efforts to find teachers were successful. Rosa eventually left the plantation and joined an Italian colony in Tonti, Arkansas.
